Heidi Hardt is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. Her research examines effectiveness, knowledge and change in international organizations, particularly in the area of international conflict management. She has expertise in NATO, the EU, UN, international cooperation, crisis management, military operations, organizational learning, organizational culture and gender mainstreaming. Hardt has single-authored two books: NATO’s Lessons in Crisis: Institutional Memory in International Organization (Oxford University Press, 2018) and Time to React: The Efficiency of International Organizations in Crisis Response (Oxford University Press, 2014). Hardt’s research has also been published in journals such as Global Governance, Review of International Organizations, European Security and African Security. She has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, the American Political Science Association and NATO Science for Peace and Security. She has also interviewed more than 250 political and military elites. Hardt received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva and her MSc in European Studies from the London School of Economics.

Amy Erica Smith is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Iowa State University. Her research examines how citizens around the world interact with each other and their representatives to shape democracy and authoritarianism. her recent work focuses on the religious communities and ideas that shape politics; her book manuscript entitled Mobilizing the People of God: Religion, Culture Wars, and Democracy in Brazil explores these questions in Brazil. Her areas of greatest regional expertise are Latin America, and particularly Brazil. Her work has appeared in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, the British Journal of Political Science, and Comparative Political Studies, and it has been funded by Fulbright and by the National Science Foundation. She has been a Visiting Fellow at Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies (2016-2017 academic year), and is affiliated with the Latin American Public Opinion Project. In September 2016, she received the Award for Early Achievement in Research from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State.
